“విష్ణుశర్మ ఇంగ్లీషు చదువు” – అప్పుడెపుడో “సంగతులూ-సందర్భాలూ” శ్రీరాం గారు తమ బ్లాగులో రాసి, తరువాత ఓ సారి ఈ-బుక్ ఇస్తే, నేను ఇప్పుడు చదివాను దానిని. చదివేసాక దీన్నా ఇన్నాళ్ళు చదవకూండా విత్హెల్డ్ లో పెట్టినట్లు పక్కన పెట్టింది అని కాస్త ఫీలయ్యాను. అంత బాగుందీ పుస్తకం. “వేయిపడగలు” దెబ్బకి నేను విశ్వనాథ వారి పుస్తకాలు ఏవన్నాచదవాలంటే రెండుసార్లు ఆలోచించాల్సిన పరిస్థితి కలిగింది. మళ్ళీ ఈ పుస్తకం తరువాత ఆయన రచనలు చదవడానికి కొత్త ఉత్సాహం వచ్చింది.
ఈ నవల్లో రచయిత కి విష్ణుశర్మ, తిక్కనా ఇద్దరూ కల్లోకి వస్తారు. కల్లో మాటకేం గానీ… ఇలలో కొన్నాళ్ళుంటారు వాళ్ళింట్లో అతిథిగా. వీళ్ళకి ఇంగ్లీషు నేర్పమని అడుగుతారు రచయితని. స్థూలంగా ఇదీ కథా విషయం. ఆద్యంతం హాస్యం. ఎక్కడా కూడా బోరు కొట్టదు. పదాలతో భలే ఆడుకున్నారు. ఇంకా, ఇంగ్లీషు నీ, తెలుగు నీ పోలుస్తూ విష్ణుశర్మ, తిక్కన అడిగే సందేహాలు, విసిరే విసుర్లు ఇవన్నీ కడుపుబ్బా నవ్వించాయి. ఈ సందర్భం లోని కొన్ని వాక్యాలు నాకు మా Machine Translation క్లాసులని గుర్తు తెచ్చాయి. రాసిన విధానం ఎలా ఉంది అంటే, ఈ రెండ్రోజుల్లో ఎన్ని సార్లు ఆ డైలాగులను తలుచుకుని నవ్వుకున్నానో! జంధ్యాల సినిమాలలా ఉన్నాయి. మచ్చుకి కొన్ని:
“కొందరేం చేస్తారంటే..అర్థరాత్రి వేళ వస్తారు. తలుపు తట్టుతారు. ’ఎవరు వారు’ అంటే ’నేను’ అంటారు. ఏమి నేను శ్రాద్దం నేను.”
“మీలో ప్రతివాడూ ఎవడో ఒకడై ఉంటాడు కదా. వాడు వాడేనని ఇంకొకడెవడో చెబితే కానీ కాడా ఏమిటి?”
“పాలముంచినా, నీట ముంచినా నువ్వే” నన్నాడు. మాకు పాలు, నీళ్ళూ వేరు వేరుగా ఉండవు. కలిసే ఉంటయి. ఇల్లు దూరమైనకొద్దీ నీళ్ళెక్కువ కలుస్తయి.
“ఆ గేదె పాలు ఇచ్చినా సరే, ఇవ్వకున్నా సరే..ఇది రోజూ నాలుగు చెంబులనిండా పాలు తీసుకవస్తుంది.”
“అసలు కవిత్వమనే వస్తువు వేరే ఉంటుంది. ఒక్కోసారి పద్యంగా ఉంటుంది. ఒక్కోసారి గద్యంగా ఉంటుంది. మరి ఒక్కొక్కప్పుడు గద్యంగా పద్యంగా ఉంటుంది. “
“ఓరిబాబోయి, వీళ్ళూ చచ్చారన్నమాటే తప్ప, చచ్చారుగనుక బతికిపోయాం గానీ …”
“పగటి కలలకు పాటింపు లేదు.”
“ఆ సంగతి నాకు తెలుసు. అందుకనే నవల రాయడం. పాటింపు ఉంటే నవల రాయడమెందుకు? దానినమలులోనే పెట్టేవాణ్ణి.”
కొన్ని అర్థం తెలీకపోయినా నవ్వు పుట్టించిన మాటలు:
“ఆకాసి పోకాసివాణ్ణనుకున్నావా?”
“లత్తుకోరు మాటలు నేర్చుకుని…”
మాట గురించి విశ్వనాథ వారి మాట – “మాటకున్నంత శక్తి మరొకదానికి లేదు. మాటకు అనేకములైన అర్థములు ఉంటవి. వంద సందర్భాల్లో ఒకేమాట వంద అర్థాలనిస్తుంది. ఒక్కమాటే అన్ని అర్థాలిస్తే రెండు మూడు మాటలు కలిస్తే ఎప్పుడు ఏ అర్థమిస్తుందో చెప్పలేము. కనుక మాటకు శక్తి లేదనకు. శక్తి లేనిది మనకు. మాట అర్థం ఇస్తుంది. అర్థం చేసుకొనవలసినది మనము.”
మొత్తానికైతే మంచి పుస్తకం. మరిన్ని సార్లు చదివినా కూడా బోరు కొట్టదేమో. నేను పుస్తకం చివరికొచ్చేసరికి Language Technologies Research లో ఒక హాస్యమయమైన దృక్కోణాన్ని చూట్టం మొదలుపెట్టాను 
ఇక్కడ తరగతి గదుల్లో సీరియస్ గా చర్చించిన విషయాల్నే అక్కడ పుస్తకం పుటల్లో విశ్వనాథ వారు చాలా చక్కని హాస్యం తో జనానికి అందించారు. అప్పటికి ఈ Natural Language Processing వగైరా లేవెమో… ఉన్నా ఆయనకు తెలిసే అవకాశం తక్కువ. అయినా కూడా నేను ఇందులో ఆ కోణం చూడగలిగాను. జ్ఞానోదయం అయినట్లు అనిపించింది, విష్ణుశర్మ, తిక్కన ల వాదం వింటూ ఉంటే శ్రీరాం కాకరపర్తి గారికి హృదయపూర్వక ధన్యవాదాలు.

Sowmya – Ncie write up. I too read this book recently (couple of months ago). Moved me very strongly. Started writing a blog about it. Darned procrastination ..anyways, nice job in your review. However I take exception to your last statement – అప్పటికి ఈ Natural Language Processing వగైరా లేవెమో… ఉన్నా ఆయనకు తెలిసే అవకాశం తక్కువ. – IN fact this book and Ha Ha Hu Hu give good indicaton that Visvanatha is intimately familiar with a lot of modern concepts.

మీరు రాసిన సమీక్ష చదివాక – ఉండబట్టలేక ఈ రోజే దీనిని అంతర్జాలంలోంచి దిగుమతి చేసుకొని ఏకబిగిన చదివి ఇప్పుడే పూర్తి చేసా. విశ్వనాధ వారి పుస్తకాలు చదవాలంటే నాక్కూడా మీలాగే కొంచెం జడుపు – ఆయనేదో ఛాందసుడని కాదు గాని — ఆయన చాలా నింపాదిగా కథ చెప్తాడు, ఆయన శిల్పంలో చాలా రికర్షనుంటుంది. నేనేమో, మెదటసారి పుస్తకం చదివినప్పుడు వైడాంగిల్ లెన్సుతో చదివి, రెండోసారి ఏ కోణంతో చదవాలో మార్కు చేసుకొంటా, కాని ఆయన రచనల్లో ఉండే రికర్షను వల్ల నాకు స్టేక్ ఓవల్ ఫ్లో అయిపోతుంటుంది.
I have a few things to say about this book but I will wait for KottaPali’s review (I have a promise to keep:-) )
There are many things he says in this book, but what attracted me most is the ‘method’ that Vishnu Sarma uses to acquire mastery in a new language. Once you understand ‘first principles’ thoroughly, you can then apply them to learn any thing else – because the first principles tend to be universal. This is a simple idea – but in order to internalize the first principles – you first have to master at least two different subjects simply because first principles cannot be taught so easily. This is a sort of catch 22 situation in teaching and learning. For example, a mathematics teacher cannot teach you how to ‘do’ mathematics – he/she can only show you enough examples, and you are expected to get the ‘trick’ yourself. In some sense, Viswanatha may be right that in the good old days – the focus was certainly more on understanding the ‘process’ of doing something rather than producing a final outcome.
Recently, I have been reading Donald Knuth’s wonderful book called ‘Things that a computer scientist rarely talks about’. The book is a series of lectures he gave on faith. In the third lecture, he talks about how he taught himself Hebrew without ever knowing the Hebrew alphabet or grammar. He even managed to do a highly acclaimed translation of bible!! The method he described in that lecture is very similar to the method used by VishnuSarma in this novel. Of course, being an eminent scientist, Knuth’s lecture is full of rigor – where as in this story there is just too much rhetoric. I used a similar method to teach myself Sanskrit without ever referring to any dictionary/grammar book on Sanskrit.
I agree with your observation that some of the topics covered in this book are routinely taught in NLP courses – may be you can talk to Vasu and see if one could use some material from this book!!

First of all thanks for talking about two good, intelligently written books!!
Here is an unsolicited, but an honest, advice- rather a tip – to those that pay no attention to copyrights etc. I don’t know who put VSN’s work in e-form on net, and that too as freely down-loadable. Without going deep into details what all I can say is that VSN’s heirs are extremely cautious about the CR issue. So, please be aware of eventual legal consequences if they come to know about that. I myself have *very strong reservations* about their policy. But when Sri Pavani Sastry was alive he didn’t help much in popularizing his father’s works, nor his sons; i.e. VSN’s grandsons have been doing any better (purely my personal opinion!!).
Velcheru Narayanarao has an excellent (again my opinion!) essay (along with the translation) analyzing VSN’s “modernity” published in a journal. He did also do a similar publication on “vishNuSarma ingleeshu chaduvu” which remains unpublished (s.a).
Digressing a bit, apropos, if one is interested in
. From philosophical side, the famous scholar late B.K. Matilal has a small monograph on “The Word and the World: India’s Contribution to the Study of Language”.
NLP and Indic languages (esp. Sanskrit) theres a whole lot of scientific/academic and pseudo-academic publications on it

I’m not alone’ అన్న ఫీలింగ్!

Absolutely novel thought of juxtaposing period writers into contemporary world. And since they are creative people kind of synonymous with the openness of their minds( can get into debate… but relativity is the hub here), they leave a lot of scope for noveau criticism.. Excellent topic to extrapolate and explore ideas.
