I was revisiting Ingmar Bergman’s movie script – “Smiles of a summer night” yesterday night (No, I did not watch the movie yet). Apart from the fact that Bergman is a master story teller, whenever I skim through these pages, I am stuck by one particular description. I am always curious as to how the actors were given instructions about the scene and how they enacted it (should check out soon!)…here it is…the scene where all the parties meet at Mrs Armfeldt’s residence.
“Malcolm leads his wife by the arm over to the old Mrs Armfeldt. Polite greetings are exchanged. Malcolm and Desiree, very formal. Malcolm and Fredrik, very severe. Anne and Charlotte, very hypocritical. Malcolm and Anne, very curious. Charlotte and Desiree, very armed.”
